POLSON — Led by Alek Mitchell’s first-place finish at 145 pounds, the defending Class AA state champion Glacier wrestling team garnered 143.5 points in a third-place finish at the Polson Invitational tournament Saturday.

Missoula Sentinel took first with 214 points and defending Class A state champion Corvallis was second with 159 points.

“Alek wrestled really tough,” Glacier coach Mark Fischer said. “He was by far the most dominant kid in his weight class.”

Cody Decker, Quinn Barber, Jackson Barber and Kaleb Mitchell each reached the final of their respective weight classes, but Fischer said his team was disappointed with its third-place finish.

“We know we have things that we have to work on,” he said. “As a team, we’re not where we want to be, and I think the kids know that. We were a little short-handed, but we’re not going to use that as an excuse. Some of the kids I could tell were a little disheartened at the end.

“They just expected a bit more of themselves, but overall it was a great experience for a lot of kids.”

Polson’s Craig Feistner and Mike Devlin placed first at 140 and 152 pounds, respectively, to help the host Pirates finish fifth as a team.

Shonn Roberts won at 112 pounds for seventh-place Columbia Falls and Zach Durden took first at 119 pounds for eighth-place Eureka.

Heavyweight Wolf Zinke placed third to lead Whitefish, which was 10th out of 13 teams.
