A quick-thinking home-owner kept a fire from engulfing even more of his home through the judicious use of a garden hose late Monday night.

According to Creston Fire Chief Gary Mahugh, the fire was caused by a wood-fired boiler in the Liahona Court home, climbing along a wall and into the attic.

The homeowner reported the fire at 10:37 p.m., then grabbed a garden hose and began attacking the fire himself, slowing its progress while firefighters traveled to the scene.

“It was a matter of just a few minutes before we had full knock-down and control, then we were there for about an hour and a half doing mop-up,” Mahugh said. “It will ultimately be several thousand dollars in damage.”

Mahugh said firefighters sealed off the roof with plywood to protect the interior of the attic from weather conditions.

“That’s something that we always do,” he said.
