Basketball roundup: West hits 29 points in Flathead's victory over Libby

LIBBY — Garth West scored 15 of his game-high 29 points in the opening quarter as Flathead rolled past Libby 66-49 in boys basketball nonconference play Saturday afternoon.

West scored all but six of Flathead’s first-quarter points.

Class AA Flathead (2-1) led 45-27 at halftime.

Jared Winslow had an equally impressive scoring effort for Class A Libby (0-3). He drained five 3s en route to a 21-point showing.

Flathead’s Blaine Newman and Libby’s Kraig Nelson both tallied 11 points.

HAMILTON — Cedric Smith dropped in 13 points and Riley Sampson 11 to lead Polson to a Class A nonconference victory in Hamilton.

Polson (2-1) doubled the score on Hamillton in the opening quarter, leading 12-6, and that lead held up for the remainder of play.

Reese Isherwood and Jesse Bartels both tallied 10 points for Hamilton.

Bigfork (3-1 overall, 2-0 league) led 38-16 at the half.

Seth Roessmann added 19 points for the Vikings.

Kyle Revier scored 11 points for Plains.

COLUMBIA FALLS — Columbia Falls closed with a 14-0 run in the final 1:40 of play to upend Frenchtown in Northwestern A conference play.

Frenchtown led 67-58 before Columbia Falls (3-1, 1-0) rallied.

Frenchtown opened the game with a 15-1 run.

“The key for us was cutting the lead to five by the end of the quarter,” Columbia Falls coach Cary Finberg said.

Frenchtown led 31-30 at the half.

Jared Trinastich scored 17 of his game-high 19 points for Columbia Falls in the first half.

Alex Presnell netted 14 of his 16 points in the second half.

Finberg said two sophomores — Ty Morgan, eight points, and Austin Kimmet, five points — were key contributors.

“They came through for us,” he said.

“We made some plays down the stretch with steals and turnovers.”

LIBBY — A strong first half carried Class AA Flathead (2-1) to a 27-point victory over Class A Libby (0-3).

The Bravettes, led by Emma Andrews, 14 points, Jenessa Heine, 12, and Emily Russell, 10, enjoyed a 25-14 advantage at the break.

Dayln Germany scored eight points for Libby.

GREAT FALLS — Glacier stumbled out of the gate with a four-point first period and never recovered in losing to Great Falls in a Class AA nonconference contest.

Glacier (2-1) was led offensively by Hailee Bennett, 13 points, and Rachel Chery, 11.

Liz Klinker and Taylor Kumm both scored 11 for Great Falls.

PLAINS — Shelby Scoggins made 1 of 2 free throws with 1.9 seconds remaining to give Bigfork the District 7B victory over Plains.

Bigfork (1-3, 1-1) had to rally in the fourth quarter, outscoring Plains 8-5.

Scoggins finished with seven points.

Josie Spoklie topped Bigfork with 14 points.

Hailey Phillips led Plains, and all scorers, with 15.

POLSON — Sophomore guard Taylor Goligoski scored 30 points to lift Hamilton over Polson in Class A nonconference action.

Goligoski netted 14 points in third quarter. For the game, she was 8 of 10 free throw shooting and hit a pair of 3s.

Heidi Rausch turned in a double-double for Polson (0-3) with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

Hallie Hovenkotter pulled down 10 rebounds.

“We have a lot of work to do,” Polson coach Randy Kelley said.

“I thought we rebounded really well, we had 42 on the night. We just couldn’t put the ball in the bucket.”

COLUMBIA FALLS — Columbia Falls survived a frantic finish to upend Frenchtown in Northwestern A action.

Frenchtown’s Abby Indreland hit a 3 to cut the deficit to two. The Broncs had a chance to force overtime, but missed the front end of the bonus free throw with no time remaining.

Columbia Falls (3-1, 1-0) trailed 22-16 at the half.

“First half, we were a little tentative,” Columbia Falls coach Cary Finberg said.

“We played more like we want to in the second half. It was nice to see us get out of the funk we were in.”

Winter Kemppainen led Columbia Falls in scoring with 13 points.

Haley Belgarde tossed in 12 for the Wildkats.

Frenchtown’s Vanessa Stavish tallied 15.
