Boys basketball roundup: C-Falls holds off Libby

COLUMBIA FALLS — Alex Presnell hit two free throws with 20 seconds left to ice a 47-42 victory for Columbia Falls in a tight boys basketball Northwestern A contest with Libby on Saturday.

“We survived,” Columbia Falls coach Cary Finberg said.

“Libby gave us everything they had. We were fortunate to win.”

Libby led by four, 26-22, at the half thanks to 6-foot-1 junior guard Jared Winslow. He scored 11 of his game-high 21 points in the second quarter.

Libby managed to hold an eight-point lead at one point in the third quarter before Columbia Falls (5-1 overall, 2-0 league) stormed back.

Luke Kazlauskas, who led Columbia Falls with 13 points, had nine in the third period.

Jared Trinastich scored six of his eight in the same period.

Austin Kimmet had three key steals during that stretch.

“We made a good run,” Finberg said.

“We went up by nine. We had trouble scoring in the fourth (quarter).

The Wildcats had just five points in the final eight minutes.

Trinastich led the Wildcats in rebounding with six.

BIGFORK — Christian Evans did not miss a shot from the field in six attempts and was 2-for-2 at the free throw line to score a varsity career high 17 points in Bigfork’s Class B nonconference victory.

He also had a team-high 12 rebounds.

Seth Roessmann added 14 points and Colter Trent 11 for Bigfork (4-2).

Roessmann and Austin Jordt both had five assists. Jordt also led in steals with eight and Cam Nissen had eight rebounds.

EUREKA — The Plains boys ran by Eureka to pick up a District 7B victory.

The Horsemen got their fast break moving in the second quarter, scoring 16 points to erase a 14-7 lead Eureka built in the first. Plains outscored the Lions 44-27 in the second half.

Aaron Baker scored a game-high 18 points for Plains, while teammate Jeremiah Crawford scored 17 and Jon Baker 10.

RJ Glover and Cameron Griffin each led Eureka with a team-high 15 points. Dalton Smith had 12 for the Lions.

Eureka is off for the holidays, returning to host Whitefish on Jan. 4.

WHITEFISH — Frenchtown hit six 3-pointers and got moving in transition, beating Whitefish (2-3) in the Northwestern A opener for both teams.

The Broncs ran up their lead in the first two quarters, scoring 17 in each of the first two frames to build a 34-18 halftime lead.

Bridger Truett scored a game-high 19 points to lead Frenchtown and John Chapman scored 13.

Cooper Olson led the Bulldogs with 12 points. Jace Kalbfleish scored 10.
