Health fair features free screenings

Kalispell Regional Medical Center holds its second Heart Health Fair from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday featuring free screenings for lipids and glucose, blood pressure, diabetes, peripheral artery disease, body composition and sleep disorders.

Located at Flathead Valley Community College, fair activities take place in the college’s Arts and Technology Building. Events include lectures beginning on the half hour at 6 p.m.

Speakers and topics are:

 Cardiologist Dr. Thomas Amidon speaks on “Coronary Artery Disease Risk Factors, Prevention and Treatment.”

 Cardiac Surgeon Dr. Drew Kirshner presents “Heart Surgery Doesn’t Discriminate.”

 Electrophysiologist Dr. Ilyas Colombowala lectures on “User’s Guide to Heart Rhythm Disorders.

The fair has educators available on diabetes, diet and nutrition, heart failure, heart disease prevention, sleep medicine and more. People interested in having screens are advised to:

 Eat normal meals and take regular daily medications.

 Drink plenty of water.

 Wear loose two-piece clothing.

 Do not wear panty hose.

As a new feature this year, the Northwest Healthcare Nutrition Services staff will cook heart-healthy food at intervals throughout the evening. They also will serve light refreshments.
