The Whitefish Fire Department responded just in time to keep a residential fire at the home of Chad and Andrea Silliker from getting out of control Wednesday morning.

“The family was home, just about ready to leave for work when they discovered the smoke,” Fire Chief Tom Kennelly said. “Upon our arrival, the homeowner was working with a garden hose.”

Kennelly said the two-story home on JP Road would have been fully engulfed in just a few more minutes, but firefighters were able to get it under control in a little less than a half hour.

The fire began in the chimney chase before spreading into the attic. The cause of the fire was electrical.

Other fire departments responding to help Whitefish were Columbia Falls, Evergreen and Kalispell, which provided a ladder truck.
