Missing kayaker rescued
A missing kayaker was found by a search and rescue team late Monday night after his craft overturned in Somers Bay on Flathead Lake.
The 39-year-old man had been reported missing at 9:17 p.m. by his son when the man did not return from fishing after he said he would be back by dark. His wife found his vehicle still at the boat launch.
Deputies with the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office and rescue workers with Flathead County Search and Rescue and the ALERT helicopter were dispatched to the area.
Using night vision, the ALERT crew located the overturned kayak in the water between two islands in Somers Bay. It was recovered by rescuers using a jet boat.
At that point, a water and ground search was initiated.
At roughly 11:30 p.m., rescuers found the man on the lakeshore. He was severely hypothermic after spending an extended amount of time in the water and on shore.
He was transported by ALERT to Kalispell Regional Medical Center.
The kayaker is listed in stable condition.
