Bigfork nets two close victories over Eureka

EUREKA - Bigfork used a big second quarter to gain a 12-point edge en route to a 58-46 District 7B boys basketball victory over Eureka on Thursday.

Bigfork (9-2 overall, 5-0 league), up 14-12 eight minutes into play, tallied 20 points in the second quarter to take a 34-22 lead into the locker room at the half.

"We didn't defensive rebound very well," Eureka coach Chad Dunn said.

"That's where they got their lead on us. Other than that, it was back and forth."

Tyler Kirby tallied 11 points to lead a balanced Bigfork attack. Chris Landon, Cody Dopps and Austin Jordt all had 10 points each.

Tanner Peterson notched a double-double for Eureka (3-8, 2-3) with 11 points and 10 rebounds.Bryton Guckenberg also scored 11 points.

Stillwater fell behind 22-8 after eight minutes of play and never recovered in losing to Whitefish JV.

Keaton Nicholson scored nine of his game-high 20 points in the opening quarter for Whitefish JV. Logan Harwood was next with 16 and EJ Havens totaled 11.

Josh Bray scored 13 points for Stillwater (10-3).

POLSON - Emma Andrews scored 22 points and Flathead (4-5) took the upper hand with an 18-point third quarter to claim a tough seven-point nonconference victory over Polson (7-2).

Polson's Riley Kenney led all scorers with 25 points.

"Lots of defensive pressure put on by both teams," Polson coach Randy Kelley said. "It was sloppy at times ... looked pretty good at times."

BIGFORK - Bigfork got big games out of seniors Taylor Peck and Melissa VanDerveer and were able to pull out a District 7B win over Eureka.

Peck scored a game-high 14 points and VanDerveer scored 13 points while hauling in 10 rebounds to lead the Vals (9-2, 4-1).

Eureka (5-6, 3-2) made it a close game with a strong third quarter, but the Bigfork defense picked up late to take the win.

"Both teams started kind of slow," Bigfork coach Mark Hansen said.

"(Eureka) had a really nice third quarter but we were able to play some defense and get out of it."

Alyssa White led the Lions with 11 points. Bigfork's Mckinze Shults had nine steals in the game.
