Flathead storms past Polson

Flathead used a big second quarter to take charge en route to a 71-48 nonconference boys basketball victory Friday night over Polson at Flathead High School.

Fifth-ranked Flathead trailed 15-11 after the first period, but a 27-point second quarter gave the Braves a 38-29 halftime lead.

Class AA Flathead (6-3) followed with a 20-point third period to put the contest away.

"We made a couple of adjustments," Flathead coach Fred Febach said.

"Matt McLean had a stellar game (21 points). He had a couple big 3s for us in the second quarter. Al Olszewski (hit a 3). We got on a bit of a roll.

"Chris Cronk had a nice putback for us. We had some things come together and we backed that up with some defensive stops on the other end."

Northwestern A's Polson (5-4) had two players in double-digit scoring - Tyler Krell with 15 points and Cody Fischer with 11.

George Sherwood had another solid outing for FHS with 17 points and eight rebounds.

Teammate Shea Schroeder had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Garth West also had 10 rebounds for Flathead.

Flathead outrebounded Polson 41-18.

Flathead is back in action tonight hosting Class A's fifth-ranked Columbia Falls Wildcats, 7:30 p.m.

FRENCHTOWN - Fifth-ranked Columbia Falls used a fast start to drop Frenchtown in a Northwestern A outing.

Columbia Falls (7-3, 4-0) led 25-10 after the first period and enjoyed a 40-22 at the half.

Austin Barth tossed in 20 points for Columbia Falls. Anthony Correa added 13 and Luke Kazlauskas 11.

LIBBY - Libby went on the offensive in third period, scoring 25 points against District 7B's Thompson Falls to break loose for the nonconference victory.

Northwestern A's Libby (2-8) held just a 16-6 advantage at the half.

Fourteen players saw action and 13 wound up scoring as Glacier whipped Northwestern A's Whitefish (1-9).

Class AA Glacier led 20-2 and 37-2 after the first two quarter stops.

Glacier (6-3) was led by Cassidy Hashley, 14 points, and Nicole Heavirland, 11.

"We got a lot of kids into the game," Glacier coach Kris Salonen said.

"It was a good win to head into next week before we get back in conference play."

FRENCHTOWN - Second-ranked Frenchtown rebounded from a slow start to drop Columbia Falls in Northwestern A play.

Frenchtown (9-1, 4-0) trailed 10-6 after eight minutes of play, but followed with 16 and 21 point quarters to take charge.

Abby Indreland and Sarah Lester shared scoring honors for the Broncs with 14 points each.

Hope Burlage topped Columbia Falls (2-8, 1-3) with 10 points.
