Glacier AA Duals mat champs
BOZEMAN - Glacier made a strong bid for being the best AA wrestling squad in Montana on Saturday at the Class AA Duals.
The Wolfpack, after a first-round bye, whipped Billings Senior 46-23, Billings Skyview 48-32 in the semifinals and then Great Falls High 50-27 in the championship match.
Glacier won eight matches in the finale, six by pin - Mack Sutherland (285), Lane Armstrong (189), Shane St. Onge (160), Grant Tafoya (152), Cooper Sipe (145) and Lucas Mantel (135). Armstrong, Sutherland and Alek Mitchell (125) were 3-0 in the one-day event.
Jackson Barber (140) was 2-0.
Mitchell pinned a 2011 state runner-up in Skyview's Brock Miller (5:51), while St. Onge pinned a 2011 state champ in Skyview's Sam Shelton (3:22).
"They wrestled really well today," Glacier coach Mark Fischer said.
"We got a lot of pins.
"We definitely won a lot of scrambles, all through the tournament," he continued.
"We caught kids on their backs and pinned them. That was a huge difference in a lot of those matches."
Results from the final were not available by deadline.
Flathead went 1-3 in dual action.
The Braves beat Missoula Big Sky 49-39. The losses were to C.M. Russell, 42-38; Butte, 51-36, and Billings West, 44-39.
"All but one of them, we were within four points of winning," Flathead coach Matt Owen said. "Overall, we were pretty much in every dual. We had one of our better wrestlers out (Coty Piasecki, 135) That could have turned the tables for sure."
Piasecki is nursing a shoulder injury.
Flathead's Larry Francis (171 pounds) was unbeaten in the one-day event. He won all four of his outings by pin, all right around the minute mark.
Jacob Egley (152) had the next best showing for the Braves, going 3-1. He won twice by pin.
"Both of them had a good weekend, Larry in particular," Owen said.
"He's been wrestling strong all year and he continued this weekend."
