FarmHands map update under way

| January 24, 2012 6:27 PM

A sixth edition of the FarmHands map is being compiled.

Organized in 2003, FarmHands is a group of local farmers and consumers who are committed to strengthening the bond between people who produce the food and the people who eat it.

The map shows the location and provides a description of more than 50 working farms, encouraging people to buy local, preserve the landscape and enjoy locally grown foods. The map also includes a harvest calendar, farmers market information, restaurants and stores that serve locally harvested foods and more.

The map will be available at local farmers markets, businesses and producers featured on the map.

FarmHands organizer and local farmer Pam Gerwe said locals and visitors are beginning to realize the breadth of the valley’s agricultural heritage.

“We hope this realization will foster a stronger farmer-community relationship, which will lead to more demand for local products, better prices for these products and a stronger farm economy,” she said.

FarmHands is in the process of contacting farms and businesses that have been previously featured on the map to collect their updated listing information. Businesses interested in continuing inclusion on the FarmHands map should call Karen at 892-4967 or email jbkb1991@centurytel.net.

Farms/producers who are new or not currently on the map and are interested in being included should email Gerwe at pam@purplefroggardens.com or call her at 862-0621. The deadline for submitting information to be included on the FarmHands map is Feb. 29.
