Glacier upends No. 4 Capital in Western AA boys basketball

HELENA - Glacier clamped down on a hot-shooting Helena Capital squad to claim a 55-44 Western AA boys basketball victory Friday night.

The Wolfpack (8-2 overall, 2-1 league) rode another strong effort by Ryan Edwards, 13 points and 12 rebounds, to the 11-point win. Edwards also had four blocks and two steals.

Kyle Griffith helped out with 13 points for Glacier and Evan Epperly wound up with 11.

Fourth-ranked Capital (7-5, 3-1) was led by A.J. Wilson with nine points.

"Even scoring, a great team effort tonight," Glacier coach Mark Harkins said.

"The defensive intensity ... I was really proud of that."

Glacier had just 11 turnovers in the contest.

Glacier is back in action today at Helena High at 2:30 p.m.

HELENA - Flathead stormed back with a 21-point fourth quarter, but it was not quite enough as the Helena High Bengals held on for the Western AA victory.

Helena High (4-7, 2-1) led 41-30 after three quarters.

Flathead's Matt Tokarz hit a 3 with 6.4 seconds remaining to get the Braves (6-5, 2-1) within one, 53-52, but Helena's Zach Hulse made a free throw with 3.2 seconds left to close out the scoring.

Flathead, ranked No. 5 in this week's poll, missed a half-court shot at the buzzer.

George Sherwood scored 17 points for Flathead.

Matt McLean was next with 12.

Hulse finished with a game-high 20 points.

EUREKA - Ryan Holder scored 16 of his game-high 25 points in the fourth period as Eureka (5-9, 3-3) dropped Plains in District 7B play.

Holder drilled back-to-back treys during his spurt. The 25 points was a season high.

Eureka's Tanner Peterson finished with 13 points while Tanner Blankers and Bryton Guckenberg both had 10.

Plains led 19-11, but Eureka roared back with a 23-point second quarter for a 34-25 halftime lead.

"We kind of woke up," Eureka coach Chad Dunn said of his team's second quarter.

"We came out flat.

"I gave them the warning," he added.

"Plains had three 3s in the first period. We didn't cover very well."

Robert Earhart had 15 points to pace Plains.

WHITEFISH - Gage Vasquez posted a double-double with 29 points and 14 rebounds as Whitefish dumped Frenchtown in Northwestern A action.

Whitefish closed out with a 20-point fourth quarter.

Jake Slaybaugh chipped in 15 points for the Bulldogs.
