Loggers roll over Red Sox in District opener

MISSOULA — Will Reichel was stellar on the mound and at the plate in helping Libby blast the Bitterroot Red Sox 16-3 on Thursday during first-round action at the Western A District American Legion baseball tournament.

Reichel went the distance on the mound, allowing six hits, walking two batters and striking out three.

“We made a last- mintue decision to throw Reichel,” Libby coach Kelly Morford said.

“We were able to throw him for seven innings and save everybody else. It’s nice to go into the second day with our ace still there, but we still gotta win the game.”

The Loggers play the Missoula Mavericks at 7 p.m.

“It was a total team effort,” Morford said.

“The offense had good at-bats up-and- down the lineup.”

Libby outhit the Red Sox 15-6.

Reichel was 3 for 4 and shared the team high for RBIs at three with Micah Germany.

Germany also finished 3 for 4, which included a double.

Jared Winslow, 2 for 4, doubled twice for the Loggers.

Libby came into the tournament as the No. 3 seed. The Red Sox were seeded sixth. The Loggers (25-20) have won seven of their last nine games.

Top-seed Mission Valley blew the game open with back-to-back five-run innings for an easy first-round victory.

Chris Clary, 3 for 4, hit an inside-the-park grand slam home run to spur the Mariners offense.

He had six RBIs for the game.

Other top hitters for Mission Valley were Zeke Webster-Yaqui, 3 for 4, and Jacob Young, 2 for 4. Both also drove in a run.

Webster-Yaqui picked up the victory on the mound, limiting Glacier to four hits.

Kootenai Valley 8, Kalispell 5

Kalispell tried to battle back from a 6-0 deficit, but fell three runs short.

Ryan Holder and Dalton Smith shared mound duties for Kootenai Valley and held the Lakers to three hits.

Kootenai Valley (31-21)plays Mission Valley today at 4 p.m. Mission Valley has won all three meetings this season with Kootenai Valley.

Ryan Anderson led the Mavs, going 2 for 4 and driving in two runs.
