Women's State Am: Frank edges Michunovich by 2 strokes
WHITEFISH — Sidney’s Katelyn Frank parred the last two holes to win the Women’s State Amateur championship, securing a two-shot lead that was nearly wiped away by a handful of golfers on Thursday at Whitefish Lake Golf Club.
“(That) is really what I was trying to go for today because it was just messy out there,” Frank said.
Frank, a sophomore at the University of Montana, was trying to make a splash at the State Am after walking on to the Griz last season.
“I don’t know if it’s completely sunk in yet, but it feels really good to have all that hard work that I put in pay off,” Frank said.
Laurel’s Katie Michunovich shot a one-under 71 on the final day to finish two strokes behind the lead. The recent Montana State grad started the day 12 shots back before shooting the best round of the tournament. Bozeman’s Lauren Hausauer, an incoming freshman for the Bobcats, shot a 81 to tie Michunovich in second place with a total score of 231.
Missoula’s Maggie Crippen, a senior at Missoula Sacred Heart and defending amateur champion, and Billings’ Kyla Clancy, an incoming freshman for the Griz, each finished three shots back at 232.
Whitefish’s Chelsea Ray finished tied for fifth with a three-day total of 234 while Kalispell’s Teigan Avery finished at 239 in 15th after a rough final round.
“Today was awful,” Avery said. “I finished up with a birdie though, my only birdie of the day.”
Only 14 years old, Avery will have quite a few more shots at the State Am.
“I definitely know what I can improve on in the future,” Avery said. “Next year I’ll do a lot better.”
Glendive’s Sue Peterson ran away with the Senior Am title after yesterday’s round, leading by eight shots entering the championship round. She capped her round with a birdie on Thursday to finish with an 80 for the day and 238 for the tournament.
“I putted really well today,” Peterson said. “I didn’t hit the driver as well as I did the last two days.”
Whitefish’s Kathy Dodd finished 12 shots back in second place, shooting 250 for the tournament. Laurel’s Sue Matson rounded out the top three with a 251.
Kalispell’s Jody Fee (254) and Wendy Madison (256) finished in sixth and seventh, respectively.
