Tough day for Libby, Mission Valley at State A baseball tournament
GREAT FALLS — Laurel (46-15-1) rallied for four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to slip by Libby 17-13 in first-round action Thursday at the State A American Legion baseball tournament.
The three-time defending state champs jumped out to a 9-0 advantage after two innings thanks to five Logger errors. Libby (29-25) used back-to-back five-run innings in the sixth and seven to battle back. The Loggers finished with three runs in the eighth.
“We were really sloppy early defensively,” Libby coach Kelly Morford said. “But we were able to battle back. We just couldn’t quite shut the door on them.”
Will Reichel had a monster game for Libby, going 4 for 6 and driving in two runs. Jared Winslow and Oliver Gruphenhoff were next with three hits each.
Gruphenhoff and Nick Robertson doubled for the Loggers.
Micah Germany drove in three runs for the Libby.
Walt Dalbey went the distance for Glasgow, holding Mission Valley to seven hits en route to a 4-3 triumph. He struck out two and issued no walks.
Glasgow scored all its runs in the late going — three in the seventh and one in the eighth. Zach Rodgers singled in Andy Gardner for the game-winner.
In other games Thursday, Gallatin Valley (34-21) edged Vauxhall (29-18) 7-6 and Belgrade (39-17) whipped Great Falls (31-24) 18-3.
