A 73-year-old Boise, Idaho man is dead after his kayak overturned in the Swan River Saturday evening.

According to Flathead County Sheriff Chuck Curry, the man was floating down the river with his friends when he entered fast water and his kayak tipped over. He was dragged down the river, clinging to the kayak with his head just above the water, before his friends were able to pull him out just north of Montana 209.

They immediately began performing CPR and called 911 shortly after 5 p.m., at which point emergency responders from Bigfork Ambulance and Ferndale Fire were dispatched and ALERT was notified. Crews worked on the man for some time, but he was eventually pronounced dead at the scene.

Curry said the man had never been in a kayak before and was wearing a poorly fitting life vest.
