Kootenai Valley, Libby split doubleheaders
EUREKA — It was definitely a tale of two games for the Kootenai Valley Rangers on Sunday.
The Rangers put together a terrific effort in the first game of a doubleheader with the Missoula Mavericks and came away with a 7-2 victory. But they had a couple of costly miscues and lost the second game 10-7.
“The first game, we played really well. We pitched well, hit the ball real well,” said Kootenai Valley coach Brent Holder.
“But it’s been a long weekend and the second game, three errors were costly. Two of three were 2-run errors. Those caught up with us,” Holder said.
Kade Davis and Bryton Guckenberg both homered and had a pair of RBIs in the first game.
Guckenburg batted 2-for-4 in the second game with a home run, a double and three RBI.

LIBBY — Sunday was a bit of an up and down day for the Libby Logger American Legion baseball team.
The Loggers split a conference doubleheader, defeating the visiting Bitterroot Bucs 8-3 in the first game, but falling 9-2 in the nightcap.
Oliver Grupenhoff and Matt Willis both had a pair of big hits fifth inning hits to lift the Loggers (11-11, 4-2) in the first game.
“Those gave us a little breathing room. Both of those guys have been seeing hte ball really well lately,” said Libby coach Kelly Morford.
Will Reichel allowed six hits, but they were spread out.
The Loggers hit the ball well in the first game — 10 hits as a team. Gruphenhoff was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Willis was 2-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI.
In the second game “we ran into a good pitching performance by Justin Bierle,” Morford said.
Leader at the plate in the second game was Willis again, 2-for-2 with two RBI.
