Even though crews are making rapid progress clearing snow at Logan Pass, Glacier National Park officials still are planning to open Going-to-the-Sun Road over the pass by the middle of next week.

“That’s still what we’re projecting,” Denise Germann, the park’s public affairs specialist, said Thursday. “We’re still plugging along.”

The east- and west-side plow crews finished cutting through the Big Drift on Wednesday, exposing about a foot-thick layer of ice on the road surface.

On Thursday, the crews worked jointly in removing snow at the Logan Pass Visitor Center, hand-shoveling walkways and installing removable guardrails.

Over the weekend, hikers and bikers can travel about 10 miles beyond the vehicle closure at Avalanche Creek to Bird Woman Falls Overlook.

On the east side, hikers and bikers can travel as far as they want beyond the vehicle closure at Jackson Glacier Overlook.
