WHITEFISH — Even with a short night, the Kalispell Lakers AA were able to shake off the cobwebs and beat the Spokane Cannons 6-3 on Thursday at the Sapa-Johnsrud Memorial Tournament.

The Lakers erupted for five runs in the second and third innings, giving them a comfortable lead they rode out to the win. Starting pitcher Dillon Eaves pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts and just one earned run for the win.

“Dillon Eaves threw very well,” Lakers coach Ryan Malmin said. “He was very efficient. He kept his composure early on when we struggled defensively and gave up two unearned runs in the first. He was able to keep his composure and he pounded the strike zone.”

Charlie Obermiller and Jake Johnson each had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Lakers at the plate.

Kalispell plays the other Washington team next, the Club Spokane Dodgers, starting at 4:30 this afternoon.

WHITEFISH — The Glacier Twins struggled to get out of the gates in their opener at the Sapa-Johnsrud Memorial Tournament, losing to the Club Spokane Dodgers in five innings.

The Dodgers scored 15 runs in the first two innings to bury Glacier early. The Twins weren’t able to get going until the fourth inning, scoring twice in the frame, but were too far behind to make a comeback.

“We kinda got our head knocked tonight,” Glacier coach Scott Murray said. “Spokane is a pretty good ball club. We came out flat. By the time we started to play a little baseball it was too late.”

Glacier had just one hit, a single off the bat of Conner Donahue that scored the first run for the Twins in the fourth inning.

“We just didn’t get it done,” Murray said. “We’ve been playing some good ball recently. We have to get back to that tomorrow.”

Glacier plays twice today, opening against the Spokane Cannons at 1:45 p.m. and playing the late game against the Chino (Calif.) Reds at 7:30.

WHITEFISH — The Kalispell Lakers held off a late rally that saw Glacier score three runs and load the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning to hold on for a conference win.

The Twins led early in the game, taking a 4-0 lead after the second inning, but needed to score late to have a chance in the game. Trailing 11-7 after the Lakers put up two runs in the top of the ninth, Glacier took three straight walks to load the bases. Peter Seymour and Bryce Wehrli each singled in the next two at-bats to score three runs for the Twins and after a walk by Isaac Venezio the Twins again had the bases loaded with just one out.

But, Lakers pitcher Justin Wallace was able to work his way out of the jam, striking out the final two batters to seal the win for Kalispell. Wallace and starter Matt McLean combined for 15 strikeouts, but got in trouble with 17 walks.

Cody Dopps went 2-for- 5 with a home run at the plate for the Lakers.

Cory Davis went 2-for-4 for the Twins with a double and two RBIs.

Tournament

POLSON — Dalton Molzhon tossed a 1-hitter and Zeke Webster-Yaqui and Robbie Gauthier both went 2-for-3 as the Mission Valley Mariners A opened their Firecracker Tournament Thursday with a 10-1 victory over the Dillon Cubs.

Molzhon struck out four batters in the five-inning American Legion baseball game and walked six.

Wester-Yaqui and Cole McArthur both doubled for Mission Valley.

In other tournament play, Libby’s Loggers (17-16 overall) earned a split.

Jared Winslow went the distance — seven innings — in Libby’s 5-2 triumph over the Hamilton Red Sox. He gave up eight hits, but fanned nine and did not issue a walk.

“Jared threw a really good game for us,” Libby coach Kelly Morford said.

“He gave up a few hits, but we shut them down.”

The Missoula Pioneers rode the strong pitching of Kyle Booi for a 6-0 win over Libby. Booi allowed three hits, struck out eight and walked one.

“Booi shut us down,” Morford said. “We couldn’t get anything going.”

Libby has the day off from tournament play today, but returns to face Mission Valley Mariners B on Saturday at 4 p.m.

The Mariners B had one outing on Thursday, losing to the Missoula Pioneers 17-1.

In Thursday’s other outing, Walla Walla, Wash., dropped the Mission Rockies 9-1.
