WHITEFISH — The Kalispell Lakers AA held tough in their second game of the day at the Sapa-Johnsrud Memorial Tournament on Friday, playing neck and neck with the Club Spokane Dodgers before falling apart late in a 12-4 loss.

The game didn’t start well for Kalispell.

The Lakers allowed the first three batters of the game to score runs, giving up a triple and a double after a leadoff walk.

After calming down the next inning, the Lakers fought back in the third with four runs of their own. Sean O’Connell, Dillon Eaves and Adam Frandsen each batted in runs after the Club Spokane pitcher plunked the first two batters of the inning. Charlie Obermiller scored Eaves two batters later to give the Lakers a 4-3 lead.

Kalispell stayed in control of the game, even after the Dodgers tied it up in the bottom of the third, until Club Spokane started to heat up its bats in the fifth inning.

Eight of the Dodgers’ first nine batters reached safely in the inning, leading to four runs and a 8-4 lead. In the sixth, Club Spokane reached its first two batters on throwing errors and got hits in the next three at-bats to score four more times and envoke the tournament’s eight-run rule, ending the game early.

The Lakers are now 1-2 at the tournament, sitting in the No. 4 spot with just one game today. Kalispell will play the Glacier Twins AA in the nightcap at 7:30.

The top two teams play each other in a championship Sunday afternoon, with the No. 3 and 4 teams playing in a consolation game Sunday morning.
