WHITEFISH— The Kalispell Lakers AA pulled away late, scoring runs in each of the last four innings to beat the Glacier Twins 9-7 on Saturday night at the Sapa-Johnsrud Memorial Tournament.

Glacier led the game early, scoring five runs in the third inning to open up the scoring. The Twins got three straight hits to start the inning, including a double from Jeremy Nielsen and a single from Carl Talsma that scored runs. Isaac Venezio and Garrett Houston knocked in the other runs with back to back singles.

It didn’t take long for the Lakers to answer, scoring six runs in the top of the fourth to take the lead.

“It was good to see the kids show the perseverance to come back,” Lakers coach Ryan Malmin said.

Glacier was able to tie the game at 7-7 in the fifth, but two late runs by the Lakers sealed the game.

Kalispell pitcher Justin Wallace held the Twins to just two runs in 4 1/3 innings of relief. Dillon Eaves had a huge day at the plate for the Lakers, going 4 for 4 with three singles, a double and two RBIs.

“We got down four or five runs and the kids were confident that they can come back and put runs on the board,” Malmin said. “Justin came in and pitched well. For a 16-year-old he is very calm, has great composure.”

Conner Donahue allowed just three earned runs in the loss, striking out two batters over six innings.

“Donahue pitched a pretty good game,” Glacier coach Scott Murray said. “He did a good job on the bump for us. The errors we made were costly.”

The Lakers will play in a consolation final this morning against the Spokane Cannons. Kalispell beat the Cannons 6-3 in the first game of the tournament. The game starts at 11 a.m.

The Chino (Calif.) Reds and the Club Spokane Dodgers will face off in the championship game at 2 p.m.
