Nationals fall in OT to Tri-Cities

WHITEFISH — The Glacier Nationals surrendered a shorthanded goal in overtime in a 6-5 loss to the Tri-Cities Outlaws Saturday at Stumptown Ice Den.

Assistant coach Butch Kowalka was given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty 41 seconds into overtime and Outlaws forward Riley Ollero found the back of the net 1 minute and 19 seconds later to give Tri-Cities (7-7 NORPAC) their first win over Glacier (6-4 NORPAC, 7-10 overall) this season.

Glacier won its two previous games against Tri-Cities 10-2 and 5-1.

Tri-Cities took its first lead 7 minutes and 27 seconds into the third period when Brett Myer scored on an assist from Ollero to put the Outlaws ahead 4-3. Glacier answered less than three minutes later when Austin Givens netted an unassisted goal.

Glacier forward Chris Cutsall scored his second goal of the game with less than five minutes remaining in regulation to put the Nationals ahead 5-4, but Tri-Cities’ Mikey Doubrava scored with 40 seconds left to force overtime.

Glacier outshot Tri-Cities 47-34, but racked up 22 penalty minutes and allowed two shorthanded goals.

Cutshall and Givens each finished with two goals. Tucker Spooner had the other Nationals’ goal.

Glacier hits the road Friday and Saturday for a pair of games in Bellingham, Wash., against the Bellingham Blazers.
