Glacier, Flathead girls triumph in soccer

Anna Deleray scored off an assist by Katie Thomas in the 43rd minute to push Glacier past Missoula Hellgate 1-0 in Western AA girls soccer action on Thursday at Glacier High School.

Glacier (4-6-0) swept the series with Hellgate. The Wolfpack won the first meeting 4-0.

“This time we tried different formations to find more goals, but came out a little flat,” Glacier coach Brenden Byrd said.

“Hellgate came out real strong and took shots from everywhere.”

Byrd said his team regrouped for the final 40 minutes.

“In the second half, our team showed how strong we really are,” he said.

Glacier wraps up regular-season play at home Oct. 12-13 with Helena High and Helena Capital.

MISSOULA — First half goals by Jaclyn Rauthe and Paige Birky carried Flathead to a victory over Missoula Big Sky.

Payton Pietron had five keeper saves for the Bravettes (6-3-0).

Flathead held a slight edge on Big Sky (1-8-2) in shots on goal, 14-12.

“The girls played good soccer for the most part,” Scott Warnell said.

“Big Sky has played us very tough both times.”

Flathead hosts Missoula Sentinel on Saturday.

BIGFORK — All the scoring came in the first half with Whitefish pulling out a tough Northern A victory over Bigfork.

Whitefish (8-3-0 overall, 5-2-0 league) outshot Bigfork (1-10-1, 1-7-1) 37-4 and had a big edge in corner kicks, 9-3.

Anna Peterson and Susanna Hodlund had goals for Whitefish.

Megan Pancoast scored for Bigfork. Jennifer Kriskovich assisted on the score.

“I thought Bigfork came out and played really hard,” Whitefish coach Wendy Farrens said.

“We had a lot of shots on goal.”

Whitefish ends regular-season action on Saturday at home, 1 p.m., versus Libby.

“It was senior night and homecoming game for Bigfork and the girls played like it,” Bigfork coach Charlie Appleby said.

“A great result against a great team.

“While we were outshot mightily, especially in the second half, we had our chances all the way through,” he added.

“A tough finish for seven seniors on the field, but I couldn’t be prouder of how they played. Keeper Jazzmyn Musser and a strong Vals defense kept us in it, especially late and gave us several chances to tie it up.”

Hellgate 7, Glacier 1

Missoula Hellgate struck early, and often, in drilling Glacier in Western AA action at Glacier High School.

Both teams came into the match 6-2-1 on the season and tied for second place.

Hellgate also won the first meeting with the Wolfpack on Oct. 13, 3-2, in Missoula.

“I’m happy with the effort, but we had a lot of momentary mistakes that cost us heavily,” Glacier coach Ryan O’Rourke said.

“We got punished on every mistake by a goal.”

Hellgate jumped in front with three goals in the first 12 minutes.

The Knights then finished it off with three goals in the final six minutes of the match.

Tanner Maroney scored for Glacier at 36 minutes. Matt Peters assisted on the goal.

“In the middle 40 minutes (of the match) I actually felt like we played pretty well,” O’Rourke said.

“It was an up-and-down game.”

Glacier wraps up regular-season action hosting Helena Capital on Oct. 12 and Helena High on Oct. 13.

BIGFORK — Two goals by Sean Janni and Nathan Boone carried Whitefish to a Northern A soccer victory over Bigfork.

Whitefish (10-0-0, 7-0-0) dominated the action on the field with 21 shots on goal to Bigfork’s three.

This was the regular season finale for Bigfork (6-5-1, 4-3-1), who advance to next week’s playoffs.

This was also the first winning season for Bigfork and coach Keith Koslosky, now in his seventh year.

“I want to thank Kyle Thomson, Bryce MacCallum, Tyler Zavala, Matt Killian, Colton Woll, Isaac Passwater and Dillon Hilling for their energy, tremendous effort and for sticking with the plan,” Koslosky said.

Whitefish ends regular-season action on Saturday versus Libby at 3 p.m. with playoff action to follow.

MISSOULA — Martin Kusnir scored at 33 minutes to give Missoula Big Sky a tight win over Flathead in Western AA play.

Clark Seaman kept it close for Flathead (0-8-1) with 14 keeper saves.

Big Sky (4-3-4) had 15 shots on goal to none for Flathead.

Big Sky also led in corner kicks, 9-0.

Flathead entertains Missoula Sentinel on Saturday.

The Braves wrap up the season with matches Oct. 12-13 with Helena Capital and Helena High.
