Flathead girls draw with Bengals in AA soccer

The Flathead girls soccer team traded shots with Western AA leading Helena but neither team was able to get onto the scoreboard, ending in a 0-0 draw.

It was the first tie all season for the Bravettes, who own the fourth seed in Western AA and will host Glacier on Wednesday in a play-in match. Flathead had 10 shots on goal and four corner kicks.

Payton Pietron made 11 saves for the Bravettes.

“It was an emotional day for us because of senior day,” Flathead coach Scott Warnell said.

“The girls came out and played real hard and got a lot of good looks on goal, played really well from front to back.”

Ashlin Deaton scored in the 38th minute to lift Helena Capital to a victory over Glacier in Western AA play.

It was also the regular-season finale for both teams.

“It was a tough, hard-fought match,” Glacier coach Brenden Byrd said.

“Both teams scrapped to the very end.”

Glacier outshot Capital 19-16.

Shaniya Carey had 11 keeper saves for the Wolfpack.

Glacier (4-7-1) finished fifth in the league standings and will now play No. 4 seed Flathead on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Kidsports Complex in a Class AA state tournament play-in match. The winner moves on to state, which will be held in Kalispell Oct. 25-27.

Glacier managed to pull out a tie with Matt Peters scoring in the 78th minute.

Jake Lockwood assisted on the goal.

Glacier (6-3-2) finished third in Western AA play and will host Missoula Sentinel on Thursday at Glacier for a state play-in match at 2:30 p.m. The winner advances to the Class AA state tournament in Kalispell, which begins Oct. 25.

Isaac Bostrom scored on a penalty kick in the 78th minute to give Helena High (9-2-1) a Western AA victory over Flathead (0-11-1).

“We probably played our best game of the year,” Flathead coach Chris Putzler said.

“Being senior day, we started all our seniors (eight). Three (Pierre Kaptanian, Scott Thompson and Levi Birky) came off the bench that have not been starting and did an amazing job.”

Senior keeper Clark Seaman had 10 saves for the Braves.

The other FHS seniors starters honored were Tucker Moe, Scott Waller, Monte White and Andrew Klingensmith.

The victory gave Helena High the top seed in Western A.

Up next is a state play-in match on Tuesday at 5 p.m. for the Braves at Missoula Hellgate.
