Hockaday offers classes for all ages

| September 5, 2012 5:30 PM

The Hockaday Museum of Art will offer several classes for artists of all ages this fall.

Preschool Art Adventures continues to run from 11:30 a.m. to noon Tuesdays. The class is open to children ages 2 to 5, accompanied by an adult.

In the class, preschool artists and their grown-up helpers will share fun art projects that encourage creativity and develop basic art skills. The class is free with a family museum membership, or $3 per child for nonmembers.

Home-school art classes will be offered from 10:30 a.m. to noon Wednesdays starting Sept. 19. In the classes, students in grades one through eight will learn about different cultures, artists and techniques used to create works of art. They will use the elements of art and principles of design in making their own drawings, paintings, prints, sculptures and more.

Cost is $6 for members, or $7 for nonmembers.

After-school art classes for students ages 7 to 14 begin this month. The classes meet from 3:30 to 4:50 p.m. Tuesdays at the museum.

Each class begins with a 15-minute free drawing period, so students won’t miss key instruction time if they arrive by 3:45 p.m.

The first class, “Drawing 1, 2, 3: The Basics and Beyond,” will be offered in three sessions: Sept. 18, 25 and Oct. 2; Oct. 16, 23 and 30; and Nov. 6, 13 and 20. In the class, students will learn to draw people, animals, cities, trees and still life objects, and will explore a variety of drawing materials.

Cost for each three-session class is $18 for museum members, or $21 for nonmembers.

The second class, “Mixed Media Exploration,” will be offered Nov. 27 and Dec. 4, 11 and 18. Students will create two- and three-dimensional art pieces and will explore color, pattern and texture.

The cost for the four-session class is $25 for museum members, $30 for nonmembers.

The Hockaday will also offer art classes for adults this fall.

“Surface Design” will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 20 and from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 27. Local fiber artist Celinda English will help students create surface art. Students will explore ways to emphasize color, texture and abstract composition. Some materials, including acrylic paint, muslin, metal, paper, glass and stone, will be provided.

The cost for the two-session class is $45 for museum members or $50 for nonmembers.

“Acrylics Unplugged!” will be offered from noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 3 and 10. Contemporary wildlife artist Shelle Lindholm will share the tricks and techniques she uses in her layered painting process, provide exercises that promote discovery of nontraditional forms and offer tips on finding one’s own style. All supplies are provided.

The cost for the two-session class is $60 for museum members, or $65 for nonmembers.
