Studio to unveil first mosaic panel

| September 12, 2012 4:00 PM

A community mosaic that has been in the works for the last several months will be unveiled at 6 p.m. Sept. 21 in Whitefish.

The first panel of Windows on Whitefish, an outdoor mosaic art project created by the public and facilitated by Stumptown Art Studio, will be revealed outside the studio, located at 145 Central Ave.

Treasured antique and historic china, glass and railroad keys have been used to create a 6- by 9-foot mosaic panel depicting the spring season and life in the Flathead Valley. Eventually a panel for each season will be completed and installed on the outside of the Latitude 48 building in downtown Whitefish.

Local artist Deb Stika designed the panels and, with the help of more than 60 volunteers, has pieced together the first mosaic panel.

Upon completion, Windows on Whitefish will be the largest public art installation in the city.

Volunteers are still needed for the other three panels. To participate, sign up for a mosaic workshop at Stumptown Art Studio to learn the basics of the medium. Then help put the next panels together.

The nonprofit studio also needs donations to cover the cost of the project and help fund art education and art experiences. Those who donate $500 or more will have their names displayed on the Windows on Whitefish wall.
