Polson, Whitefish roll; Eureka picks up first win of season

POLSON — Andrew Weltz passed for 175 yards and two touchdowns as fourth-ranked Polson blanked Columbia Falls 35-0 in the Northwestern A Conference football opener for both teams.

Polson (4-0 overall) led 21-0 at the half.

“A great overall effort,” Polson coach Scott Wilson said.

“I was real pleased with how we played.

“Offensively, we were more consistent this week than the last couple,” he added.

Colton Lenz led the Polson ground game with 162 yards on 23 carries and one touchdown.

Polson totaled 277 yards rushing.

Weltz completed 7 of 13 passes. He threw one interception.

His TD strikes were 18 yards to Dylan McCrumb and 31 yards to Jared Gallatin.

Will Davey and Beau Mills both had 5-yard touchdown runs.

Columbia Falls slips to 2-2 overall.

Whitefish 45, Libby 29

WHITEFISH— Luke May passed for 231 yards and fourth touchdowns and Shane Marcial scored three times in Whitefish’s Northwestern A victory over Libby.

May was 14 of 19 passing.

Shane Marcial had 17 carries for 146 yards. He returned a fumble 45 yards for a score, hauled in a 19-yard TD pass from May and ran 40 yards for another.

Whitefish (3-2) had 440 yards in total offense in the league opener for both teams.

Jared Winslow had three TD passes for Libby (3-2).

Eureka 36, Troy 14

EUREKA — The victory wait for Eureka is over.

Trent Vaughn ran for two touchdowns and Chris Ibach ran for one and passed for another as Eureka whipped Troy in the District 7B opener for both teams.

Eureka (1-3 overall) had 372 yards in total offense to Troy’s 272.

“We finally flew around and hit like we were expecting our kids would do,” Eureka coach Trevor Utter said.

“We had some good plays.”

The biggest was Nikko Bakkala’s 95-yard interception return for a TD.

One negative was turnovers. The Lions had five.

“We need to take care of the ball a little bit better,” Utter said.

“But we’re 1-0 in league. It’s good to be there.”

Ibach had 19 carries for 207 yards. Vaughn finished with 81 yards on six attempts.

Andrew Haggerty had three receptions for 49 yards and a touchdown for Troy (0-4).

Luke Haggerty rushed for 74 yards on 17 attempts.
