Senior band open for players
Flathead Valley New Horizons Band invites adults 50 and older with or without music experience to join the group for the fall learning and performing season.
Director Eileen Alexander said this semester includes more concerts and new music in a wide variety of styles. Practices started in September for new and experienced players, but it’s not too late to join the fun.
“Beginners need no previous playing or music-reading experience to join beginning band on Tuesdays,” Alexander said. “Each member needs to provide their own band instrument and ‘Essential Elements 2000’ band book for their individual instrument.”
She said the band especially needs low brass players such as trombones, baritone horn and tuba, and bass guitar — although all sections welcome new people.
A tuition fee of $75 pays for instruction through the semester and other expenses.
According to Alexander, band members come from all walks of life. They enjoy making music together as well as making new friends.
“Our rehearsals are fun,” Alexander said.
The band now is working on music for Veterans Day celebrations as well as Christmas holiday events. She said the band welcomes invitations to perform.
“Our availability is 6 p.m. and after for performances, since many of our active seniors still work day jobs,” she said.
