Glacier golfers on top in state AA
GREAT FALLS — Glacier has the top individuals and a leading team — boys — after opening round play Friday at the Class AA state golf tournament at Meadow Lark Country Club.
Ryan Porch shot an even-par round 72 to pace the field on the 6,600-yard layout. He has a two-shot edge on seven players, including teammate Tommy Mann.
Glacier’s Logan Iverson opened with a 75, which puts him in a tie for ninth place.
Kevin Talcott and Cody Sherrill were next in line for Glacier. Both shot 80.
Talcott was 7-over after eight holes, but used an eagle on No. 9 to turn it around.
The Glacier boys, 301, hold a slim lead on Billings Skyview, 304. Billings Senior, 313, is third.
Flathead, 341, is 10th.
Ryan Keenan had the best effort for the Braves with a 78.
On the girls side, Glacier’s Teigan Avery is off to a fast start with her 2-over 74. She leads Sammy Walter of Billings Senior by five shots.
Billing Senior, 335, has a one-shot edge on Glacier, 336, in the team race. Billings West, 353, is third.
Flathead, 400, is 10th.
Morgan Knutson had the best round for the Bravettes with her 89.
Glacier’s Hannah Davis and Kaydee Aurich both shot 85, which puts them in a three-way tie for 11th place.
Teammate Kirsty Haugenoe broke 90 for the first time this season with her 89.
“They (Mann and Avery) played outstanding,” Glacier coach Rob Logsdon said of his two freshmen.
“I’m really excited about tomorrow. You just don’t want to shoot yourself in the foot (the first day). Mission accomplished.”
Play winds up today at Eagle Falls Golf Club.
