| September 29, 2012 6:00 PM

Jane Adair Rowell Kauffman, 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012, at Immanuel Lutheran Home in Kalispell.

She was born on July 22, 1920, in Deer Lodge to Fred P. and Martha C. M. Rowell.

She graduated from Flathead County High School in 1939 and married Rollan Samuel Kauffman on Feb. 3, 1940, in Polson. Shortly after, her husband was drafted into the Army, serving in World War II. Jane went to stay with her parents near Klamath Falls, Ore., and became a telegrapher for the Southern Pacific Railroad. After the war, the family moved back to the Flathead Valley where they raised their children and Rollan worked locally. Later, Jane worked for a period of time at the Flathead County Nursing Home, then served until her retirement in 1981 as a deputy city treasurer for then-Treasurer Gail Bruch.

Jane and Rollan loved the outdoors and spent many happy hours gardening and enjoying their beautiful yard, along with other outdoor pursuits that included hiking, camping, fishing, cross-country skiing and generally enjoying Western Montana’s many lakes and streams. Travel was a fun activity for them and twice they traveled to Alaska by motor home. They also took art classes together and enjoyed oil painting. Being an accomplished seamstress, Jane sewed clothes for her family, did needlework, quilted, and completed many craft projects for the enjoyment of others. She was involved in humanitarian work, often working with other church ladies providing supplies for missionaries. Her faith in God was very important to her, with her family a close second. She prayed and read the Bible daily. She was active in her church, and for a number of years, played the accordion for various Bible Clubs around the valley.

Jane was preceded in death by three grandsons; her brother, Fred Rowell; and just two years ago, her husband, to whom she was married for 70 years.

She is survived by her children, daughter Phyllis Swallow and husband Wesley of Kalispell, son Dennis and wife Irene, also of Kalispell, and Cheryl Hammond and husband Buddy, of Depoe Bay, Ore.; as well as six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at Central Bible Church with Pastor Ron Youde officiating. Burial will follow at C.E Conrad Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 1 at Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Chapel.
