MISSOULA — Makena Morley keeps breezing right along.

The talented sophomore from Bigfork won her second-straight Mountain West Classic on Saturday at the University of Montana golf course.

Morley, the defending Class B state cross country champion, posted a flashy time of 17 minutes, 7.4 seconds. Her winning time last year was 17:10.4.

Paige Gilchrist of Missoula Hellgate was second, 17:31.1.

Bozeman ran off with the girls team title, filing a 74 score. Billings Senior was second, 138.

Andrew Gardner of Mead High in Spokane had the best time for boys, 14:25.9. Adam Peterman of Missoula Hellgate was second, 14:33, followed by Troy Fraley of Glacier, 14:45.3.

Zach Perrin of Flathead was fifth, 14:58.2.

“Five guys under 15 (minutes), that’s never happened before,” Flathead coach Paul Jorgensen said.

“That was a very fine showing by the boys.”

Jorgensen said Perrin “didn’t have a great day,” but good enough to break 16 minutes.

“Peterman had a tremendous race,” Jorgensen added. “Fraley had a really good race, too.”

Fraley finished second at last year’s Mountain West with a time of 15:01.5.

Perrin did not compete in this event last year because of an ankle injury.

“Outstanding race,” Glacier coach Mike McLean said of Saturday’s show.

“One of the fastest I’ve seen in Montana. Nobody was running slow out there.”

On Fraley ...

“Great time today,” McLean said.

“He’s not done. He’s still moving up.

“The boys, up and down, ran real well. Five out of seven ran personal bests.”

Glacier finished 12th in the team standings.

“Our highest finish in the Mountain West,” McLean said.

The Glacier girls placed 28th, led by Jessica Chery, who posted a time of 20:09.

Flathead’s boys placed 10th.

“Our No. 2 through 7 runners were less than 30 seconds apart,” Jorgensen said.

“That’s really good. They are running in a pack, which is nice. They feed off each other, help each other out.”

Mackenzie Bouma was the top runner for the Flathead girls. She finished 125th in 20:42.

Whitefish had two runners crack the top 30 with Jace Kalbfleisch 22nd, 15:52.8, and Fischer Gangemi 24th, 15:53.2. That helped the WHS boys place 16th in the team standings.

“Last year they were 90th (Gangemi) and 100th (Kalbfleisch), so that was a huge improvement for them,” Whitefish coach Sarah Brist said.

“Both ran under 16 minutes, a minute faster than last year. All seven (boys) finished under 17 minutes. That was a good team performance.”

The top runner for the Whitefish girls was Sarah Latcham. She was 142nd with a time of 20:55.

University High of Spokane led a 1-2-3 Washington finish in the boys’ team race with a 119 score. Mount Spokane was next, 123, followed by Mead High, 174.
