Whitefish Mountain Resort brings its winter season to a close this weekend with a main attraction, the eighth annual pond skimming event.

Resort spokeswoman Riley Polumbus said as many as a couple thousand spectators have shown up for the event, which features costumed skiers launching from a ramp onto a pond near the village area.

“It’s our most well-attended event from a spectator perspective,” Polumbus said. “You don’t have to ski to watch. It’s easy to walk to the event even if you’re not a skier.”

Pond skimming gets under way at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Polumbus said participants are being urged to pre-register online (skiwhitefish.com) or call 862-2910.

The event is limited to 60 participants. If there are spots available after pre-registration, interested participants need to be at the pond by 1:30 p.m.

First chairlifts open at 9 a.m. over the weekend, and the season will close with the last chairlift at 4 p.m.

Soon after, the ski patrol’s traditional end-of-season party will commence at the Great Northern Bar in Whitefish.

Meanwhile, the Blacktail Mountain Ski Area west of Lakeside will be open through Sunday, and may switch to a weekends-only schedule afterwards as snow conditions allow.
