Shorthanded because of spring break, Glacier wasn’t lacking talent in the field on Thursday in a track dual with Great Falls High.

Four Wolfpack athletes recorded state qualifying marks, leading Glacier to team wins for both the boys and girls.

Shelton Todd shook off scratches in his first two javelin attempts to uncork a 183-foot, 7-inch throw that locked up his place in Bozeman for state.

“It really came off well,” Todd said. “I scratched my first two, which were around 180. I switched javs and hit it, finally.”

Teammate Rial Gunlikson leapt 42-4 3/4 in the triple jump to also secure a place at state. Gunlikson also won the long jump but sat down on the landing, finishing at 19-6.

Glacier won every field event, taking the meet with a team score of 98-47.

“(Both teams were) missing a lot of kids,” Glacier boys coach Arron Deck said. “Overall it was a great day for our younger kids to get a chance to compete at a varsity level.”

On the track, Evan Epperly won both the 200- and 400-meter dashes. Aaron Robinson beat out Epperly in the 100, as the Wolfpack took the top three spots in the sprint.

The girls were led by leaper Leah Cook, who won both the long and triple jumps. She stuck a leap of 16-10 in her first attempt in the long jump, setting a state qualifying mark. She didn’t quite reach her mark in the triple jump, still managing to span 35-5 for a meet win.

“I practiced over the winter, I feel like some of it will pay off later on,” Cook said. “It was a nice, laid back meet. It’s a good setup for the rest of the season.”

Katie Wiley set a personal best in the high jump, clearing 5-1 in her second attempt to also record a qualifying mark. She finished second in the event to Great Falls’ Lizzy Klinker, who won a tiebreaker on jumps.

Shauna Williams won all four events she entered for the Wolfpack, topping the 100, shot put and discus, before anchoring the winning 4x100 relay team. This is her first year competing in the sprints.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever had a girl be in four events and be champion (in all four),” Glacier girls coach Jerry Boschee said.

The Wolfpack girls beat GFH as a team 86-46.

“It was a good start and a really nice day,” Boschee said. “I’m excited. There are so many young girls. I think our older kids got out and did what they should. Our young kids, it’s an experience.”

Glacier picks up its full team and heads to the Missoula Invitational for its next meet on Apr. 13.
