Softball: Florence thumps Eureka; Polson blanks Hamilton

EUREKA — Defending Class B-C state champ Florence swept a Western Division softball doubleheader from Eureka on Thursday.

Florence scored 16 runs in the first two innings to drop the Lions 20-2 in the opener.

Florence pushed 13 runs across the plate in the first two innings of the second game en route to an 18-2 victory.

Florence had 22 hits to Eureka’s seven for two games.

“Laura Williams came in and threw strikes and did what she had to do,” Eureka coach Andy Escobar said of his pitcher.

“Her defense could have backed her up a little better.”

Eureka had seven errors in the first game and three in the finale.

Nicole Anderson went 2-for-2 at the plate for Eureka in the second game. Cassidy Morgan was 1-for-3 in both games.

Eureka (1-6-1) hosts Thompson Falls on Saturday. The doubleheader begins at noon.

HAMILTON — Home runs by Jessica Bagnell and Heidi Rausch and strong pitching by Shalaina Duford helped Polson crush Hamilton in nonconference play.

Duford held Hamilton to three singles. She fanned seven batters and walked three in the five-inning contest.

Polson tallied three runs in the first and fifth innings.

Bagnell, 1-for-4, had three RBIs and Rausch, 1-for-2, two.

Jaylin Kenney was 3-for-3 and scored twice for the Pirates.
