Tennis wasn’t the only thing Glacier singles player Danny Roe had on his mind Thursday afternoon in a dual with Columbia Falls.

“He had a rough start in the first set, then he focused a little bit,” Glacier coach Josh Munro said.

“He had to fight (in the fourth annual Crosstown Boxing Smoker) later (Thursday). I think that was on his mind.”

Roe won his No. 1 singles match 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (9) over Caleb Baumann of Columbia Falls.

The Glacier boys rolled over Columbia Falls 8-0.

The Glacier girls won their dual with Columbia Falls by the same score.

“A lot of nice, competitive matches in singles ... all the way around,” Munro said.

“Five of the eight singles matches (boys and girls) were very close.”

Keckeley Habel, at No. 2 singles for Glacier, defeated Gabby Keller 3-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (8).

“Good fight out of Keckeley,” Munro said.

“She was down the entire match, was down the entire tie-break in the third to win it. She won the last four points.”

Both schools, along with Flathead, will face the three Missoula schools on Saturday in invitational play.

Boys and girls Nos. 1-2 singles and doubles will be played at the Flathead Valley Community College courts.

Girls No. 3 singles and doubles action will be at Thompson Park, while No. 3 boys singles and doubles will be played at Hawthorne Park. All the action starts at 9 a.m.

More than 140 matches will be played with 90 at FVCC.

The top five boys singles players in the state will be competing — Glacier’s Kellen Bates and Hunter Blalack, Missoula Hellgate’s Alex Braun and Dylan Harvala and Flathead’s Glenn Strickler.

Bates is the defending AA state champ while Braun placed second last year.

Whitefish sweeps

Bigfork

WHITEFISH — The Whitefish girls improved to 5-0 in dual action with a 5-2 victory over Bigfork.

Bigfork posted wins at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.

“No. 1 doubles was a very entertaining match,” Whitefish coach Patrick Dryden said.

“They (Bigfork’s Alannis Stallknecht and Shelby Scoggins) had control of the net. It seemed like we were constantly behind. If we pulled even, we fell behind immediately.”

Stallknecht and Scoggins defeated Megan Danczyk and Lindsey Viscomi 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3).

Dryden said Ryan Chauner, at No. 1 singles, was “consistent, played very steady.” She beat Madison Fraley 6-0, 6-2.

In the boys dual, it was all Whitefish as the Bulldogs triumphed 7-0.

“I am proud of how my team played,” Whitefish coach Chris Schwaderer said.

“Some of the younger players are starting to look more comfortable on the court as they continue to develop. The older guys showed their experience by winning matches that could have gone the other way. I look forward to seeing how we compete with Polson and Dillon on Saturday.”
