Local book clubs are gearing up to discuss everything from Communism to baseball at their May meetings.

The Montana History Book Club will discuss “The Red Corner: The Rise and Fall of Communism in Northeast Montana” by Verlaine Stoner McDonald at its May 9 meeting.

The book explores a little-known phase in Montana history when Communism was openly supported in one part of the state.

The group meets at 6:30 p.m. at the Museum at Central School, 124 Second Ave. E., Kalispell. The book is available in the gift shop; call 756-8381.

For more information, call Diane at 752-0204.

The Flathead Library Book Discussion Group will talk about Louise Erdrich’s “The Master Butchers Singing Club” at its May 14 meeting.

This story of love, death, redemption and resurrection follows German soldier Fidelis Waldvogel, who returns home from World War I to marry, and then packs his father’s butcher knives and sets sail for America, settling in Argus, N.D.

The meeting starts at 5 p.m. in the conference room of the main Flathead County Library in Kalispell.

For more information, contact Marylane Pannell at kuhlpan@cyberport.net or 257-5793.

The Whitefish Library Book Discussion Group discusses Chad Harbach’s “The Art of Fielding” at its May 29 meeting.

College ballplayer Henry Skrimshander seems destined for the big leagues until a routine throw goes disastrously off course — and the fates of five people are changed forever.

The group meets at 6 p.m. in the Whitefish Community Library meeting room. Books may be available for checkout.

Everyone is welcome to attend.
