It didn’t seem that fast when he was running it, but by the time he crossed the finish line it was the fastest 3,200 meter time ever run in the state.

Flathead’s Zach Perrin won the 3,200 in a time of 9:06.13, a time that was more than six seconds faster than the 12-year-old record set by the Braves’ David Vidal in 2001.

“I wasn’t sure what to expect, my legs have been really tired,” Perrin said.

“After the first few laps, I started feeling really good ... It didn’t feel that hard. It felt like a regular day, but for some reason — the weather is nice, the wind isn’t too bad — we were able to go out and run some good times.”

Glacier’s Troy Fraley finished second in 9:12.00, a time that also would’ve topped Vidal’s state record of 9:12.14.

“I started pushing it the last lap,” Perrin said. “I came through, they said 9:06. I was stoked. It felt good to have it over with.”

Perrin also holds the record for the fastest 3,200 time run outside of the state, finishing in 8:55 at the 2012 Arcadia Invitational in California.

The run highlighted a dual that saw nine athletes set state qualifying marks.

Glacier’s Todd Ogden threw the javelin 190 feet, 1 inch in his first meet of the season, the second farthest throw in the state this season. He also won the shot put, with a toss of 44-3.

Flathead’s Dylan Creek set a personal best mark of 14 feet in the pole vault, the second best height in the state this season. The only mark higher was set later on Tuesday at the Top 10 meet in Missoula.

Creek just missed on three attempts at 14-6, the school record.

“It felt good when I vaulted,” Creek said. “Sometimes that’s all you need, for it to click and just go.”

Flathead’s Matt Quist cleared 6-3 in the high jump to win the event and set a qualifying mark.

Flathead’s Matthew Tokarz and Glacier’s Kyle Griffith each had huge marks in the long jump, with Tokarz edging Griffith by half an inch with a leap of 21-8.5. Griffith won the triple jump with a mark of 43-0.5.

The Glacier boys won the dual with a team score of 94-51.

The Flathead girls were impressive, nearly sweeping the meet, with three Bravettes setting state qualifying marks.

Rhiannon Sturgess was edged by teammate Kwyn Johnson in the 300 hurdles, but will be joining Johnson at state, finishing in 47.39. Johnson won the meet in 47.37.

The Class AA state record holder in the triple jump, Johnson also won her marquee event with a mark of 36-6.5 and finished second in the long jump with a qualifying leap of 16-7.75. Bravettes teammate Jaclyn Rauthe also qualified, winning the event with a jump of 17-1.5.

The Flathead girls 400 relay also will be headed to state, crossing the line in 50.25 seconds.

“We were talking about it before,” Flathead anchor leg Dani Davis said. “We got it done.”

Davis just missed a qualifying mark in the 100, winning the event in 13.03 seconds, a shade over the limit. She also won the 200.

Glacier’s Anna Deleray, in her second meet back for the Wolfpack, missed a state mark in the 400 by less than half a second, winning in 1:00.49.

The Flathead girls won the dual with a team score of 85-60.
