MISSOULA — The top athletes from the Valley held their own against the best in the West on Tuesday at the 15th annual Russ Pilcher Western Montana top 10 track meet in Missoula.

A dozen athletes from the area placed at the meet, which hosts the top athletes from all four classes in Western Montana.

Whitefish’s Marlow Schulz was neck and neck with Helena High’s Callie Kanthack in the sprints. Schulz won the 100-meter dash in 13.05 seconds, but fell behind by a step in the 200, finishing second in 26.18 seconds.

Bigfork’s Makena Morley was back to her winning ways, annihilating the competition in the 3,200, finishing in 10:51.12, more than 40 seconds ahead of the runners up. Morley set the meet record in the event last year, at 10:44.46.

Whitefish’s Luke Cardon was the only male athlete to win an event from the area, crossing the line in the 800 in 2:01.06, more than a second in front of Big Sky’s Ty Rather.

Bulldog teammate Logan Harwood finished fourth in the 400, in 51.1 seconds. Whitefish’s Sean Foley finished fourth in the pole vault (13 feet, 6 inches) and led a string of area leapers in the long jump, finishing third with a span of 20-2.5.
