Softball roundup: Glacier splits on road trip
MISSOULA — The Glacier softball team split a pair of Western AA conference games Thursday, losing 4-3 to Missoula Big Sky before bouncing back with a win 5-4 win over Missoula Sentinel.
The games were Glacier’s second and third conference road games of the season.
“We had a front-loaded home schedule that has been nice for us,” Glacier coach Andy Fors said. “I don’t think we were prepared to go on the road and we need to learn to travel better.”
Sentinel (5-7 overall, 4-4 Western AA) led 4-2 after four innings, but Glacier (8-3, 6-1) tied it up in the fifth, then scored the go-ahead run in the sixth on an overthrow. A sacrifice bunt by Katie McHugh advanced Marysa Rogozynski to second base, but Rogozynski got caught in a rundown between second and third. Sentinel’s throw to second ended up in center field and Rogozynski scored to put the Wolfpack ahead 5-4.
Rogozynski and Ali Williams each batted 2-for-3.
Pitcher Jena Willis earned the win, striking out seven while giving up five hits and three walks.
“We dug ourselves a hole and I was really proud of the girls to show some resiliency, stick it out and get the win,” Fors said.
In the loss, Big Sky (8-5, 5-3) broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning when Jessica Brady scored on a single by Jess Schafer.
Glacier’s Kayleena Ikeda batted 3-for-4 with a double.
After the split, Glacier remains in first place in Western AA with a 1.5-game lead over Big Sky.
