New trailer to help flag retirement
A dedication ceremony for a flag retirement trailer will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of the Montana Veterans Home in Columbia Falls.
The event will be held in conjunction with a burger feed hosted by the Kalispell Elks Lodge No. 725.
Eagle Scout Nathan Hartford of Boy Scout Troop 1901 designed the trailer as a way to properly and respectfully retire worn U.S. flags in the community.
Hartford thought of his Eagle project after attending flag retirement ceremonies at the Veterans Memorial in Kalispell, where flags were retired in 50-gallon drums.
He felt people didn’t understand the significance of the retirement ceremony and designed a fire pit mounted to a trailer surrounded by flag bunting to show the proper respect for the retirement of flags.
The Elks will store the trailer and it will be loaned to various Flathead Valley organizations for the honorable disposal of American flags.
Gardner’s RV, Anderson’s Masonry, Western Building Center, Little King Trucking, Montana Ace Hardware, Pacific Steel and Recycling and Cardinal True Value Hardware contributed to Hartford’s project.
