Wind fails to slow down ARM athletes

WHITEFISH — Despite blustery weather, there were five records broken at the ARM Invitational on Saturday at Whitefish High School. Winds gusted up to 20 mph directly down the front stretch, creating a strong head wind for athletes finishing their races.

That didn’t slow down the girls, with four girls tying or setting new meet records and plenty others setting state qualifying marks.

Whitefish’s Marlow Schulz dominated the sprints, winning the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes. Schulz crossed the line in the 400 in 58.02 seconds, beating the 5-year-old meet record by .92 seconds. The time also qualified her for state, where she won the event last season.

“My two biggest competitors were inside me (on the track),” Schulz said.

“My goal was to never see them, keep them behind me the whole time. It worked out.

“(The wind) was like hitting a wall coming around the corner. At that point you’re just ready to be done.”

Bigfork’s Makena Morley was equally dominant in the longer races, winning the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. Morley, who set the 1,600 record last year, beat the 3,200 record on Saturday. Finishing in 11:02.56, she beat the old record, set in 2010 by Bigfork’s Kayla Carlson, by nearly 36 seconds.

Hailey Phillips, of Plains, won both of the hurdles runs, setting a new record in the 300 hurdles with a time of 45.64. Havre’s Lacey Waid tied the meet record in the pole vault, clearing 10 feet.

Flathead’s Kwyn Johnson took it easy this meet, resting her legs after two meets earlier this week. She did stay productive though, qualifying for state in the high jump, her only event. She’s now qualified in all three jumps and both hurdles.

“I grazed (the bar), I could tell it was bouncing,” Johnson, who cleared 5-1, said.

“It stayed up, it felt really good. I kinda surprised myself.”

There was a lot of success in the field events, where the winds had less of an impact. Columbia Falls’ Carla Nicosia set a qualifying mark in the triple jump with a winning bound of 34-5 and teammate Ellie Johnson threw the javelin 121-5 to win the event and set her place at state. Flathead’s Cassie Krueger and Glacier’s Tessa Krueger each tossed qualifying marks in the shot put.

The Whitefish girls 400 relay also finished with a qualifying time.

The boys side didn’t see the same amount of record setters, but was still fast for the conditions.

Whitefish’s 400 relay, anchored by 200 and 400 winner Logan Harwood, nosed past the meet record, beating Havre’s mark in 2003 by .02 seconds.

Glacier’s Troy Fraley coasted to victory in the 800 and the 1,600, sprinting the last half of the shorter race to set a new personal best and qualify for state. Fraley broke 2 minutes for the first time, finishing the 800 in 1:59.31.

“I didn’t feel super taxed,” Fraley said. “I just wanted to break 2:00. It was pretty good.”

Wolfpack teammate Kyle Griffith won the long and triple jumps and Shelton Todd won the javelin with a toss of 188-8. Zach Dennehy qualified for state with a winning toss of 148-1/2 in the discus.

Thompson Falls’ Preston Schubert won both the 110 hurdles and the high jump.

Glacier won the boys meet with a team score of 162. Plains won the girls meet with a score of 78.5.
