Softball: Glacier splits; Flathead drops 2

There was no Western AA softball sweep for Glacier this time.

The Wolfpack, which beat Helena Capital 7-0 and Helena High 6-1 on Saturday in Helena, faced both teams again on Monday, but at the Kidsports Complex with mixed results.

Glacier pulled out a thrilling 4-3 win over Capital in nine innings, but fell to Helena High 6-1.

Glacier’s Taylor Riggles led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a walk, advanced to third when Jenna Willis reached on a error, and scored on a single to left field by Kayla Russell.

“The first game was nice,” Glacier coach Andy Fors said.

“Good to see the girls have the composure and experience to go nine innings and come away with a win against a good Helena Capital team.”

Glacier had 10 hits in that contest. Kayleena Ikeda went 3 for 3 and Kayla Russell, Katie McHugh and Anna Jenks had two hits each.

It was a far different story against Helena High. The Wolfpack were held to a pair of singles by Bengal pitcher Mackenzie Donnelly.

Helena High had nine hits and scored two runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings.

“They got girls on and were able to move them,” Fors said.

“Not to take anything away from them, but I don’t feel like we had our best performance in this one.”

Glacier (11-4 overall, 9-2 league) plays at Class A Polson tonight at 6.

A rally in one and a big inning in another made for a long day for Flathead.

Helena High tied it at 2-all with two runs in the sixth inning and added another in the seventh to sink the Bravettes.

Capital then clubbed 21 hits and scored nine runs in the seventh inning to pull away for the victory.

“That took a lot out of us losing the first game on errors,” Flathead coach Ashley Fusaro said.

“We couldn’t get our heads back up for game two.”
