Canoe captains know their place
The Flathead County Sheriff’s Office, among other agencies, was called out Tuesday to help find a pair of Canadian canoeists lost somewhere on the Hungry Horse Reservoir, who turned out not to be lost at all.
According to Sheriff Chuck Curry, the missing persons call came in from a canoe rental business Monday evening when the men, both in their 20s, didn’t return their canoe. Monday, with help from several agencies including North Valley Search and Rescue and Two Bear Aviation, the disappearing duo eventually was located.
When found, the men reported it had been their plan all along to canoe out and spend the night camping somewhere in the area before returning the canoe later in the day on Monday.
A 911 misdial from a cellphone at a local ranch led to an open line through which dispatchers could hear men talking about cows and giggling.
A spate of midnight and early morning calls kept Kalispell Police officers running Tuesday morning as youths set off fireworks around town.
The calls began at 12:19 a.m. and lasted until 4:15 a.m., reporting teenagers on Third Street West, youths at the back side of the high school on Sixth Street West, unknown people on Seventh Street East, and unknown people on 11th Street East.
One Seventh Street East resident also asked that officers check on his neighbor, at whose house a fire started the prior night due to fireworks.
A semi-truck driver with a balance problem was temporarily trapped in his rig when the vehicle rolled onto its side on Whitefish Stage Road Monday, spilling engine oil and pulling down phone or cable lines. The rig was righted after about two and a half hours.
A pair of speed-crazed boys were reported driving at close to 100 miles per hour through Lawrence Park.
A Bluestone Drive woman complained that her neighbors left dog feces on her porch because she reported them for a barking dog, after having tried to talk to them and leave notes to get them to silence the howling hound.

A Beth Road resident contacted the Columbia Falls Police Department after receiving a visit from an aggressive, foreign-sounding door-to-door book salesman who “does not take no for an answer.”
A drunk man escaped arrest Monday afternoon due partially to a full jail. The man was reported sitting in a truck in a Ninth Street West parking lot by a passerby who said the man “does not look good.” Although he was drunk, the truck was not on and the keys were not in the ignition.
A 58-year-old man suffered a head injury in a fall from Grinnell Glacier Trail Tuesday. The man fell about 6 to 10 feet, and was transported by ALERT helicopter to Kalispell Regional Medical Center at about 2:30 p.m.
