Common sense is OK, but it sure can't make pigs fly!

On the subject of immigration, some people try to frame the debate as if you have to be either pro-immigration or anti-immigration.

The implication of such black-and-white thinking is that you either have to support an open-door policy that permits anyone to cross our meaningless border, or else you are a heartless grump (substitute your favorite expletive to get the desired effect) who wants to keep out everyone because you are a no-good racist (expletive inserted here also — you’ll get the hang of it eventually)!

If people resort to this level of argumentation, you may as well walk away and, as Jesus said, shake the dust off your feet, because they have no interest in real immigration reform or real discussion. They are just playing gotcha.

If, on the other hand, someone is willing to concede that not all immigration is good for the country and that we the people have a moral right of self-determination about how the human tapestry of our nation is woven, then there is a reasonable expectation that a compromise can be reached that respects the human rights of American citizens as much as the aspirations of those who wish to join us in the land of the free.

The crux of the matter comes down to illegal immigration. Being against illegal immigration does not mean you are against immigration; it means you are in favor of law and order. But being in favor of law and order, we are told by proponents of amnesty and open borders, means you are either racist or stupid.

You are racist because you don’t believe that everyone who sneaks across the border should be considered to have earned a right to stay. You are a racist even though you are judging people on the content of their character, rather than the color of their skin, just as Dr. King implored us all to do. You are a racist because you want to protect your country’s morals and values. It has nothing to do with race, but racism is now just a cudgel to smack people down if you disagree with them.

Along the same lines, you are stupid because you think there is actually a solution to 12-plus million illegal immigrants. Believing in solutions in this post-modernist society is stupid, we are to infer. It’s almost as though every hospital birthing room should have a sign visible above the crowning heads of every baby born: “Abandon hope all ye who enter here.” No wonder our government lurches out-of-control from crisis to crisis when common-sense solutions are dismissed out of hand and complicated Rube Goldberg (look it up!) inventions like Obamacare and Comprehensive Immigration Reform are hammered together out of dreams and wishes, then held together with the glue of corruption and insider deals.

So for the umpteenth time, here is the solution to the problem of the 12 million people who are here illegally. NO, you don’t have to round them up and put them on buses under police guard as they are driven to the border. Instead, you can follow the law! It is illegal to hire illegal aliens. SO... Businesses that illegally hire illegal aliens should be fined massively, shut down, have their executive officers sent to jail, or all three! And YES when there are no jobs, the illegal immigrants will do the same thing they did when there were no jobs in Mexico or wherever they came from — they will migrate to where the jobs are! This is not cruel, not unusual, and not punishment. It is common sense! If they have children who were born in the United States, those children will be welcomed back whenever they want to return — hopefully as adults who want to take their place as responsible citizens.

But gosh, I forgot that common sense is racist or stupid or both. Or maybe it is just a lost cause like constitutional government and God-fearing religion. Maybe the Chuck Schumers of the world are right, and we can save our country by giving it away!

This is nonsense, of course — but nonsense is what makes pigs fly, so it must not be all bad, right?
