Tilda 'Tillie' Lydia (Ost) Green, 83

| August 20, 2013 4:00 PM

Tillie passed away on June 30, 2013, at home, at the age of 83.

Tillie was born in 1930 in Zap, N.D., to Christ and Emma Ost. They moved to Priest River Falls, Idaho, and from there moved to Whitefish, in 1933, after a fire claimed their home in Idaho. Tillie was in a severe motorcycle accident when she was 17 years old, and spent most of her senior year of high school in a hospital in Spokane with numerous broken bones and was in traction for months.

After her return to Whitefish, she met and fell in love with Arthur Green who, at the time, was a boarder at the Ost house while working on Hungry Horse Dam. They later married, on Oct. 29, 1949, at the Episcopal Church in Whitefish. They were happily married for 56 years, until Art's passing in 2005.

Tillie will always be remembered for her amazing ability to cook, especially over an open pit fire for large groups of people. She was a Cub and Girl Scout leader and helped to form many young minds. She had a passion for gardening and took great pride in her flower beds.

She occasionally worked out of the home for various hotels in Whitefish, but her main job, and love, was being a full-time mom to her three wonderful children and their numerous pets. Tillie also helped form the Big Mountain Ski Patrol.

Art and Tillie were blessed once again in their lives in 1970 to acquire a stepson, Greg Loberg.

Tillie is survived by her two sons, George and Karen of Columbia Falls, and Greg Loberg of Whitefish; and one daughter Renee, and Steve, of Minnesota; six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren; brothers, Fred Ost and Margie of Whitefish, and Leo Ost of Whitefish; sisters, Ida Grant of Las Vegas, and LaVonna of Washington; sister-in-law, Millie Hansen, of California, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Arthur Henry Green; parents, Christ and Emma Ost; brothers, Otto, Butch, Orrin and Gene; sisters, Loretta and Laverne; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Art and Tillie’s lives will be held at  2 p.m. on Aug. 24, at the Stillwater Free Lutheran Church. The family would like to invite you to a time of fellowship and remembrance at the church immediately following the services. Burial will take place at 6 p.m. at Whitefish Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Stillwater Free Lutheran Church, the Flathead County Animal Shelter, or to your choice.
