Golf: Mann, Larson lead Glacier in Missoula

MISSOULA — The Glacier boys took three of the top four spots and claimed the team title at the season-opening Missoula Invitational on Thursday at The Ranch Club.

Tommy Mann beat Wolfpack teammate Scott Larson in a scorecard tiebreaker to win the individual medal, with each shooting a two-day total of 149 for the tournament. Mann won the tiebreaker by making birdie at the par-4 13th hole, while Larson settled for par.

However, Larson was the better player on Thursday, finishing with a 74 to Mann’s 75.

Glacier’s Kevin Talcott finished in fourth place at 151 after shooting a 77 in the second round. Cody Sherrill also shot 77 on Thursday, finishing in seventh place with a 156. The team finished with a total of 605, beating second-place Missoula Hellgate by 27 strokes.

Flathead’s Ryan Keenan, leading after the first day, couldn’t follow up his fantastic opening round, shooting 77 in the second round to finish in third place at 150. Joseph Potkonjak finished in a tie for ninth with a 158, shooting 75 on the final day. The Braves finished in fifth place as a team.

Polson finished in eighth place as a team (677), led by Alex Killian’s 170.

The Polson girls finished in third place as a team with a total of 779. They were beaten out by Class AA squads Missoula Hellgate (706) and Helena Capital (728). Jaylin Kenney finished in eighth place to lead the Pirates, shooting a second round 84 to finish at 180.

Glacier sophomore Teigan Avery followed her first round 83 with an identical score on Thursday to finish in second place with 166. She was topped by Capital’s Coral Schulz, who ran away with the title shooting 77-80 in her two rounds to finish at 157. The Glacier girls were in sixth place.

The Flathead girls finished in fifth, with Jenna Jensen finishing in ninth with a 184 after successive rounds of 92. Morgan Knutson finished in 10th place, firing an 87 in the second round to cut her score to 186.

Flathead and Glacier are back on the course Monday at the Great Falls Invitational. Polson, which golfed in two tournaments this week, is off until hosting the Polson Invitational on Sept. 3.
