Joan Gallup, 79

| December 7, 2013 8:06 PM

Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Joan Gallup, 79, died unexpectedly on Dec. 4, 2013 from natural causes in Bigfork.

She was born July 15, 1934 in Moscow, Idaho to Everett and Margaret “Ernie” Anderson.

As a child, she lived in Seattle during World War II. Her family returned to Moscow where she graduated from high school and met the love of her life, Vernon Gallup, while studying at University of Idaho. They moved to Ketchikan, Alaska following their marriage and Vern’s graduation. Vern had an opportunity to teach high school, but the electrical industry brought them to Spokane, Wash., where they raised their three children.

As a mother, Joan was active in Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls. For fun, she knew how to bowl a turkey — spending several years on a league at Silver Lanes on Spokane’s South Hill. She found peace in the great outdoors while tending her gardens and canning her favorite fruits and vegetables — and at times crowding the cupboards of friends and family with jams and jalapeno jelly.

To relax, she curled up with a classic science fiction or romance novel beside the rivers of the Pacific Northwest, Yellowstone and South America as Vern fly-fished for trout.

She had a beautiful life.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Michael Anderson, all of Spokane, Wash. She is survived by her husband Vern, son Neil Gallup of Spokane, Wash.; daughters Corinne (Eric) Hensley of Spokane, Wash., and Michele Wheeler (Edmonds). She is also survived by her granddaughters Kimberly (Mike) Berlin and Nicole Hensley and great-granddaughter Izabelle Berlin as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She is loved and missed by all her friends, family and not to mention, her precious cats — Pippin and Sunshine.

Services will be held at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home, 2203 North Division in Spokane at 1 p.m. on Dec. 13. Interment will follow promptly after the service at Spokane Memorial Gardens, 5909 Spokane-Cheney Road, Spokane, WA.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity in Joan’s name.
