Departments rush to deer's rescue

Whitefish Fire Department and Whitefish Police Department personnel responded to a pond off U.S. 93 South after a deer fell through the ice. The deer was able to stay afloat by swimming and eventually made it out of the water.

A concerned motorist contacted Whitefish Police to report that Wisconsin Avenue was “a solid sheet of ice from Hidden Moose to Haskill Station” and requested an officer check it out. The officer who responded spoke with a street department representative, who said a crew would get to the area as quick as it could.

A Shiloh Avenue woman reported her suspicions that her neighbor had taken her cat and not returned it. The neighbor told an officer she had let the woman’s cats in before but had not seen the feline in question for about a week and was going to turn the woman in for cruelty to animals. She was advised to stop taking in the cats.

A motorist reported being rear-ended on East 13th Street by a woman with no insurance. The motorist was afraid she would leave. A report on the incident was set to be filed after it was determined one of the vehicles had fictitious plates.


A man was arrested for burglary and transported to the Flathead County Detention Center after initially being reported to the Flathead County Sheriff’s Office for refusing to leave a U.S. 2 East business and repeatedly going into the bathroom. The man left and was later arrested on Ash Road, where a resident reported the man had gone through his vehicle and boat.

A miffed motorist reported the driver of a car was passing people on Blacktail Road, heading up to the mountain. He believed the driver was an employee, but said calling the ski area just put him in touch with a “smart-mouthed” woman.

A motorist reportedly was all over the road on Batavia Lane before driving into a ditch and then getting out and stumbling around. The driver was given a ride home by his roommate, who agreed to watch him for the evening. A passerby stopped and reported the man was drunk and had argued with him before deciding to leave.

A black-clad woman was advised to stay off the road after a passing motorist nearly ran her over as she walked down the middle of United Drive.

A perturbed parent of a 15-year-old girl reported she had shown up drunk after attending a party on Trumble Creek Road.

A pair of friends made amends after one of the men spun a brodie in his friend’s Haskill Basin Road lawn, tearing up the grass.

A man entered a Shady Lane home, pushed a woman to the ground, punched her in the back of the head, and then left.


A battery theft believed to be a prank was reported to the Kalispell Police Department. The victim said the battery was stolen out of his vehicle while it was parked behind a First Avenue West bar. He found the battery in the back of a pickup truck just three vehicles from his. Officers allowed him to take back the pilfered power source.

A surprised Sixth Street East woman called police after receiving a strange letter on her doorstep containing shrink-wrapped drugs.

An observant passerby reported a drug deal in the middle of a U.S. 2 West parking lot with a truck parked at the entrance serving as a lookout.

A 10th Avenue West resident reported a couple screaming obscenities “again.” A resident of the apartment in question called in to report she had just kicked out three people who weren’t supposed to be staying in the apartment and that the situation had been resolved.

A man reported as walking down Fifth Avenue East talking to himself and yelling loudly was determined to be a harmless young man known to walk around with headphones on and sing along loudly.

A “little Scottie dog” was reportedly wet and scared to death while running up and down the middle of Third Avenue West.

Several people suffered slight injuries in a three-vehicle accident on East Idaho Street.

An employee at an East Idaho Street business reported a very drunken man came into the store, slurring and stumbling, and then ran over a curb when he left.

A woman was reportedly hanging on a West Wyoming Street fence and talking to herself.

A boy was cited and released to a parent after he was caught trying to shoplift from a North Main Street store.

A pair of men were reported screaming and threatening to kill each other on Fifth Avenue East.

A man reportedly drinking in a U.S. 93 South parking lot was actually only eating an egg salad sandwich.

A Woodland Avenue resident reported receiving a fraudulent phone call from someone claiming to be from the sheriff’s office.

A man was arrested after grabbing his child’s mother by the arms at a Fourth Avenue East property.

A plow truck driver struck a parked car on First Avenue East North.

No one was seriously injured in a T-bone accident on U.S. 2 West.


A drunken motorist was reported to the Columbia Falls Police Department after he stumbled into a Ninth Street West store, talking to himself and smelling of alcohol, and was refused service when he tried to buy more alcohol. A witness reported the man’s direction and his name.

A friendly dog was released to its owner after a woman reported the dog started following her as she was walking and shared her concern that it would follow her across the highway and get hit.
