Prep hoops: Hellgate boys rip Glacier

MISSOULA — In a matchup of top five teams, No. 5 Hellgate controlled No. 2 Glacier from the tip, thumping the Wolfpack 53-32 in Western AA boys basketball play Thursday.

Tres Tinkle scored 25 points for the Knights (5-1 Western AA, 11-2 overall), including a 3-pointer at the end of the first half that extended a 10-0 run into the break. Hellgate led 33-15 at the half.

Glacier (4-2, 11-3) scored the first six points of the third quarter but couldn’t make the run it needed to get back in the game. The Wolfpack shot 25 percent from the field and went 0-9 from 3-point range.

Ryan Edwards scored a team-high 11 points for Glacier, which falls into third place in the conference.

The Wolfpack will have a chance to redeem itself in Missoula on Tuesday, when they play at Sentinel (0-5, 2-11).

Polson 64, Eureka 51

EUREKA — Cedrick Smith and Riley Sampson each scored 15 points to boost Polson to a nonconference win at Eureka.

The Pirates (4-9) came out of the gates fast, scoring 16 points in the first quarter and 20 in the second to build a 36-22 lead at halftime. In all, nine players scored for Polson in the game.

Tanner Blankers led Eureka (0-15) with a game-high 17 points and Austin Perez had 10 in the losing effort.

Glacier 53, Hellgate 35

The Glacier girls built a 10-point lead after the first quarter and were able to cruise to a Western AA home victory over Hellgate.

Cassi Hashley, Katie Wiley and Hailee Bennett each scored 12 points to lead the Wolfpack (4-2, 11-3). Hashley had another big night on the glass, finishing with 16 rebounds to complete the double-double. Rachel Chery scored eight points with 10 rebounds.

Lexi Duce had 15 points to lead Hellgate (0-6, 1-12).

The Wolfpack will have the weekend to prepare for a big game against No. 1 Sentinel on Tuesday at Glacier.

BIGFORK — Columbia Falls piled on early, then held on late to beat Bigfork in a nonconference game.

The Class A No. 3 Wildkats (11-4) made 9 of 12 free throws down the stretch to beat Bigfork, which got the game to within eight points. Winter Kemppainen scored 18 points, Haley Belgarde 17 and Ciera Finberg 15 to lead the Kats in the win.

Josie Spoklie scored 13 points and Shelby Scoggins 12 to lead the Valkyries (4-11).

“The girls battled really hard and just had two bad stretches,” Bigfork coach Mark Hansen said. “You can’t do against a team of that caliber.”
