State swimming: Siebenaler, Streit eye return to state finals
After six regular-season meets in five different cities, the high school swim season, which began Dec. 1, 2012 with the Kalispell Invitational, comes to a close this weekend in Hardin with the 45th annual state championships.
Swimming begins today and Saturday at 11 a.m.
The first day is dedicated to preliminary action in all events. The top six swimmers (based on time) advance to Saturday’s finals. Swimmers finishing seventh through 12th today, move on to Saturday’s consolation finals.
Glacier has two swimmers back who placed in the finals last year at state.
Makenna Siebenaler finished third in the 200 freestyle and fourth in the 50 freestyle, while Logan Streit was fourth in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 50 freestyle.
Both are seniors.
The Glacier boys and girls placed eighth and 10th, respectively in the final state standings.
Flathead did not have a boy or girl qualify for the state finals a year ago. The Braves and Bravettes were both 16th in the team standings.
The C.M. Russell girls made it five straight state championships in 2012, tying Helena High for the title.
Bozeman took the boys trophy.
“The Glacier guys — Jordan Loyda, Logan Streit, Josh Loyda and Jake Cirincione — have a chance at winning two relays and individual events,” Flathead/Glacier coach Dave Lillard said.
“Cassie Krueger (Flathead) and Makenna Siebenaler (Glacier) are seeded fourth and fifth respectively, in the 50 freestyle. Both have a chance of moving up a couple spots.
“Siebenaler is also seeded fourth in the 100 free with a great possibility of a top three finish,” Lillard added.
“Emma Hornby (Glacier) and Hailie Mass (Flathead) are right on the cusp of making the console finals in the 50 free.”
Glacier’s Jessica Stenberg is seeded fifth in the 500 freestyle while teammate Sara Burch could make the consolation finals for the first time in the 100 backstroke.
“She is just one second away from the 12th-place spot,” Lillard said of Burch.
“Maddie Walters (Glacier) is only a couple seconds away from making consoles in the 200 individual medley.”
